The magnificent peridot (otherwise known as Olivine) is the birthstone for August and also happens to be one of the oldest and most important known gemstones – it dates back as early as 1500 B.C. according to ancient records! Peridot forms in magma in the upper crust of the Earth surface and is brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity, making them extremely rare. It has even been known to be found in meteorites that have fallen from space! This August birthstone comes from the mineral family olivine, which contains a chemical composition of the iron and magnesium. The gemstone shade depends on the percentage of iron that is contained in the crystal structure so the colour can vary from yellowish green to brown, however, the lime and olive green shades are the most desirable.

In ancient Egypt, Peridot gemstones were called “gems of the sun,” referring to the golden glow that emanates from within. Often mistaken for emerald, peridot has long been called the ‘evening emerald’ since it glows with luminous intensity under artificial light. Its hypnotic hues have enticed many an admirer and some historians claim that Queen Cleopatra’s famous collection of emerald jewels may have actually been peridot.

Spiritually, Peridot is known for the manifestation of all desired things, meaning ‘what you put out into the world will come your way’. This gem also symbolises strength, good fortune, opportunity, peace and prosperity. It has many healing properties to keep you calm, cool, and collected. Emotionally, it can help with depression, as it detoxifies any negative feelings that you may have and bring them to a comfortable level. This gemstone is also believed to bring out the best in people. Wearing this gemstone can help people feel unconditional love for others and find balance in their personal and professional relationships. Another fun fact about the peridot is that it can help heal and relieve feelings of guilt and lessen obsession.

In Indian tradition, this gemstone relates to the fourth chakra: the heart and solar-plexus. Additionally, it’s great for increasing Reiki energy. This is closely linked to compassion, love and affection. Peridot can help to propel love around your being, enabling you to follow your true destiny, live in alignment and listen to what your heart is trying to tell you. The advantages of peridot soothes nerves and dispels pent-up anger and anxiety.

This wondrous green hued stone possesses huge detoxifying qualities, stimulating the liver and metabolism. It is deemed to considerably improve gallbladder and liver function and can also help to combat a number of skin ailments. It can often be used alongside traditional medicines, helping to aid and speed up recovery from illness or injury. The stone is known to assist the treatment of allergic reactions, digestion problems, swelling and skin growths as well as colon issues.

Peridot should be worn next to the skin, placed over the liver or taken internally as a precious gem essence or elixir. To detoxify fatty tissues in particular, peridot is soaked in sunflower oil for four weeks and can then be added to foods.
